Project: Shed reorganised

Recently, I helped a friend tidy up their shed. Located on the side of the house, this storage space is home to a huge variety of things, so it naturally started becoming a little chaotic!

So my friend decided it was time to rearrange the contents for easier access and booked me in for a quick 2–3 hour job.

The shed when we finished

With three neurodivergent kids and a very hectic day-to-day life, the shed had slowly become a dumping ground where things were put into storage without any real order. Over time it reached a point where it felt completely overwhelming to deal with. From the very beginning, Fran understood exactly what was needed. She approached the shed in a very methodical way, breaking everything down into small, manageable steps and working alongside me rather than directing from the sidelines. That made such a difference — once we started, momentum built naturally and the whole process felt far less daunting. And took a lot less time than I thought! Fran has an incredible attention to detail. She made sure everything in the shed wasn’t just tidy, but handled with real care and respect for my belongings. Nothing felt rushed or careless, and I always felt confident that my things were being treated thoughtfully and intentionally. What I appreciated most was Fran’s patience and encouragement. She consistently offered positive reinforcement and support, never pressure. By the end, the shed was completely transformed, and the sense of relief was enormous. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without Fran’s help, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her. Thank you again, Fran — it made a bigger difference than I can properly put into words.

Unraveling the contents of the storage

We started by looking at the space we had in the shed.

  1. After looking at the layout, some corners were harder to reach than others. Perfect for long-term storage.
  2. I noticed the space on the right, under the stairs, was well lit and easier to access, but you couldn’t stand up there.
  3. Finally, the space at the front of the shed was perfect for everyday things.

Next, we looked at the contents. The shed was home to a big variety of items, from holiday decorations for Halloween and Christmas to cleaning products. There was hobby-related equipment, bikes for everyday use, and many, many buckets of paint for different rooms of the house, along with spare bathroom tiles and wooden flooring.

So we decided to make it a little more organised. How? Simple.

When storing things away, large plastic boxes can come in very handy! Available at ScrewFix and other places.

Making the shed more accessible!

A brief discussion and the client and I agreed on the following course of action:

Long term storage

The spare tiles and wood flooring went at the very back of the shed, under the stairs. Access wasn’t easy, but the area was dry and perfect for storing things not needed in the short term.

Yearly access storage

TThe space under the stairs, closer to the front, was ideal for seasonal and holiday decorations, some cleaning products, and the buckets of paint needed for quick touch-ups around the house.

Every day use

Finally, the front of the shed was perfect for everyday items. The bike and the golf clubs were now easy to access whenever needed!
