Project: Kitchen out, kitchen in

Packing and unpacking a kitchen, easily and smoothly

When my client decided to replace their kitchen, they needed a system that would allow the builders to work efficiently while keeping their belongings organised.

The challenge was not only packing everything up but also ensuring a smooth and strategic unpacking process once the new kitchen was installed.

Packing smart: keeping things accessible but out of the way

To avoid cluttering the work area (we had many contractors going in and out of the kitchen) we packed everything into sturdy, stackable, reusable boxes, clearly labelled with Post-its for easy identification.

Boxes for storage can be plastic, cardboard, or textile. However in this case we opted for fully sealable plastic containers, as we wanted to avoid dust getting into it, and we needed to re-use them in the future.

If you are a Costco member, these are great at just under £12 each, they are heavy duty and also have holes if you need to add a padlock and keep in a storage facility.

These boxes are sturdy, cheap, and stackable. Great for reuse!

We kept the boxes with more commonly used items at the top of the piles for easy access, as the works were going to last almost two weeks.

These boxes were stored opposite the kitchen but away of the contractors’ way, so that the workers could their job without obstacles.

We did this in a timely and efficient manner, so that the renovation could proceed without delays or misplaced items (I find it so disrupting when I need something and I can’t find it!!).

Unpacking with purpose

Once the kitchen was ready, we carefully planned the layout before unpacking. Using Post-its, we assigned every cabinet and drawer a purpose:

✔ Spices near the cooker for easy access
✔ Pots and pans stored underneath the cooker ready to use
✔ Baking trays in the cabinet near the oven
✔ Tea, coffee, mugs, and cups close to the sink, kettle, and dishwasher
✔ Snacks near the kitchen entrance for a quick grab-and-go

With the plan in place, unpacking was quick and efficient. Soon-to-expire items were placed at the front, and the Post-its stayed up temporarily to help my client adjust. Finally a place for everything!

The result? A fully functional, organised kitchen—ready to use from day one!
