Project: Under the sink, under the sea

Searching for answers under the sink

The space under the sink often becomes a catch-all for cleaning supplies, sponges, and random odds and ends.

Particularly if we have a busy life, it’s easy to toss everything into a basket and call it a day.

Sometime thou, when you need something and you’re in a rush, digging through that overflowing basket can be frustrating. So how can you make it better?

We decided to take everything out and start fresh

The first step was to empty the cabinet and group similar items together according to their purpose (were they for the sink, the dishwasher, or the bathroom?).

Then we started creating the best space for each category. Washing machine products went on the right of the cabinet for easy access when loading the dishwasher (on the left of the sink), while sink-related items like sponges and washing-up liquid were placed on the left for convenient access while washing up (sink was on the right).

Before

After

This new set up was a real game-changer, as it made grabbing relevant things easier, without being encumbered by the cabinet doors.

By assigning each category its own space, it became much easier to see what was there at a glance.

It's all about seeing what's there

This simple system not only made the area more functional but also highlighted unnecessary duplicates and half-used bottles lurking at the bottom of the basket (half-used bottles are now on the front, so that my client can work through those before opening up a new bottle of bleach).

No more feeling overwhelmed by the jumbled basket, now the cleaning products are easy to grab, saving my client time and stress in their daily routine.

The under-sink space is no longer a black hole: it’s an efficient, tidy little corner of the kitchen!
