Thoughts: What do I love about organising?

The other day, I sat at my desk and thought: why do I love organising my flat?

I am not a tidy person. Nor do I love cleaning.

In fact, I can be quite lazy and spend a whole evening playing games.

But there is something that I truly love, and that’s making my life easier.

I make my life simple with little things. Like setting up a direct debit, so I don’t have to remember to pay that bill. Or having a place for everything in my flat and sticking to that, so that I can quickly find what I need.

I’m always looking at ways to make my life simpler. An organised drawer means that I can find what I need quickly. A colour-coded wardrobe translates to getting dressed more efficiently. A simple decor in my flat means that it’s easier to clean.

I love those little things.

Like that great feeling of taking all your old paper documents and turning them into weightless PDFs.

Or noticing that cardigan that you haven’t used in over a year, and boxing it up to give to charity, making space for new clothes or to see better what’s already there.

But also, I really do enjoy that extra £20 I earned by selling old books online. Books that, by the way, were collecting dust on the shelf. A shelf that I needed to dust regularly.

I remember reading “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo back in 2016, while I was in the States for a work trip. I loved it. And then we had the TV show on Netflix. And then we had “The Home Edit“.

In the UK, we saw many charity shops getting donations, after donations, during the covid lockdown back in 2020.

However, charities are now struggling with fewer and fewer donations, and more and more demand due to the recession.

It’s a brave thing to look at what you have, and decided that you need less. Donate more, keep less.

Because who wants to dust ‘000 of books? Or keep old documents that really should be digitised and archived? Or store all those clothes that no longer fit you or simply are not you anymore?

Whatever the reason you are doing that, sometimes it’s hard to do the first step on your own.

Sometimes, you need someone to help you out.

  2. I’m not sure exactly why but this site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

  3. Can I simply just say what a relief to find someone that really understands what they’re talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More and more people need to check this out and understand this side of your story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular because you certainly possess the gift.
